The Fifth Element (1997)

The Fifth Element (1997)

The Fifth Element is a 1997 French science fiction action movie written, co-directed, and produced in English by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. Milla Jovovich, Chris Tucker, Gary Oldman, and Bruce Willis all appear in it. Most of the story takes place in the 23rd century, and Korben Dallas (Willis), a taxi driver and former special forces major, is put in charge of ensuring that Earth survives after a young girl (Jovovich) accidentally falls into his cab. Dallas teams up with her to accomplish this by locating four mystical stones necessary for protecting Earth from an upcoming attack by a malevolent cosmic entity. Despite some really poor reviews, The Fifth Element earned mostly favorable reviews. The movie got nominations for the Golden Raspberry and Stinkers Bad Movie Awards and won several categories at the British Academy Film Awards, César Awards, Cannes Film Festival, and Lumières Awards. On a $90 million budget, The Fifth Element was a huge financial hit, grossing more than $263 million at the box office. It was the most expensive European movie ever made at the time of its release, and until the 2011 release of The Intouchables, it held the record for the highest-grossing French movie worldwide.

Plot

According to the story’s premise, a “great evil” to eradicate life manifests itself every 5,000 years in combination with a planetary arrangement. In order to gather the only weapon capable of defeating the Great Evil, a collection of four stones representing the Classical Elements and the eponymous Fifth Element that conjugates the other four into organic life, a group of aliens known as the Mondoshawan landed on Earth in 1914 in preparation for their next appearance in 2263. After seizing the weapons, the Mondoshawans give a priest a key and instruct him to spread the word about their purpose to future generations to prepare for the evil’s invasion.

The movie starts in Egypt in the year 1914 as the Mondoshawans return and disturb an overly curious archaeologist examining the old hieroglyphs that reveal the temple’s history. The aliens remove the stones and a sarcophagus containing the fifth element from the planet because it is no longer safe. The lead alien gives the priest in charge a key and instructs him to impart his knowledge to future generations. After 300 years, the year is now 2263. A fiery planet in the center of nothingness has revealed itself as the Great Evil. The Great Evil is prepared for a fleet of intergalactic battleships when they show up to investigate the strange sight. The in-charge Admiral, anxious, orders the battleships to launch missiles toward the planet. That merely multiplies the size of the globe and feeds it.

The four run into David in the temple as the great evil nears Earth. They set the stones down, but Leeloo has given up on life after learning about humanity’s awful history of warfare. Dallas kisses her and tells her he loves her. As a result of combining the power of the stones, Leeloo vanquishes the big evil by emanating divine light from it. She and Dallas are praised as heroes and embrace intensely in a recovery room as guests prepare to greet them.
