About Luc Besson

Luc Besson is a highly acclaimed and renowned French director, producer, and writer. He was born and raised in Paris and has greatly impacted the world film industry. He is regarded as one of the best directors of all time by most acclaimed critics. He began his career working in Parasian films at a very early age (after an accident). Luc went to Hollywood at 19 to learn and discover American film. L’Avant Dernier, Besson’s first short film, was made when he was 20. Later, in 1983, he made a full-feature film based on the same concept. The film won the Grand Prix of the jury and the Prix de la Critique, establishing Luc as a filmmaker. Until now, he has been involved with more than 76 films. 

Besson’s second feature film was subway (1985). His Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue (1988)) became ‘the’ movie of a whole generation. The Big Blue brought Besson international fame and recognition. Both films contributed to the “Cinema du Look” movement of the 1980s. 

Nikita (1990) was his second international box office hit. The visual style and uniqueness of Besson’s filmography make him a very popular director. He made a french-Italian documentary film called Atlantis with dolphins. The film took Besson two years to complete. Critics have always appreciated Luc’s dedication and innovative ideas about filmmaking. Besson made a few popular action series films in addition to art and documentary films. His popular action movies are Kiss of the Dragon, Transporter, Taken, and more. In 1992 Luc founded the studio EuropaCorp with Pierre-Ange Le Pogam and became a prolific film producer. Known as the “Jerry Bruckheimer of French cinema. During the 1997 Cannes Film Festival Official Competition, he competed in two of his films, one as a director and one as a producer. His last directed film was Anna(2019). He won many awards in his film career, including Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival (1983), BIFFF, European Film Awards, and more for his contribution to cinema.The life of the film maker is a little controversial because he has been married four times. The actress Sand Van Roy, who worked with Besson on a number of films over the course of the last few years, has accused Besson, as of 2018, of rape. The French prosecution had dropped the case against Luc Besson, citing a lack of evidence in 2019.

Luc Besson is best known as a director, but he is also a successful producer.  His influence on world cinema has been phenomenal till now.
