Plot

Ethan Renner, an American CIA operative, works with a squad to apprehend the Albino, a lieutenant of an arms dealer known as the Wolf, who is selling a dirty bomb to terrorists in a Belgrade hotel. When the Albino identifies one of Renner’s fellow operatives (posing as a chambermaid), he realizes the trap and murders her. Suddenly dizzy as he follows the Albino, Renner only succeeds in shooting him in the leg, crippling him, before going unconscious and allowing the Albino to go. The Director has personally tasked “Top Shelf agent” and skilled CIA assassin Vivi Delay with assassinating the Wolf. Vivi is watching the operation and thinks Renner may have accidentally glimpsed the Wolf.

Renner has a severe cough that is virtually incapacitating, and his incurable lung cancer has spread to his brain. He is only given a few months to live and won’t live to see the next Christmas. He risked losing them by carefully guarding his perilous career against his wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) and daughter Zooey (Hailee Steinfeld). He tries to mend his broken relationship with his daughter and, if possible, his ex-wife with the time he has left. When he returns to Paris, where he and his family live apart, he discovers that Jules’ Réunion family has taken up residence in his apartment. The government informs him that he cannot evict poor squatters until after the winter.

He accepts Vivi’s offer to help her track down and kill the Wolf in exchange for an experimental medication that might considerably lengthen his life. Renner reluctantly agrees to gain extra family time. Vivi advises him that the best approach to getting the Wolf is first capturing the Albino, then his accountant, and lastly, the gang’s limousine driver. Renner is always battling the drug’s hallucinatory side effect, which arises whenever his pulse rate gets too high, and he can only regulate it by drinking alcohol.

Finally retired, Renner makes it to Christmas, which he spends with Zooey and Christine at a beach house. He finds another vial of the cancer treatment inside a little, red-wrapped present package. As Renner opens the box, Vivi grins on a hill behind the house.
